Benefits of drinking tap water
Water and your health
Your body cant store water so you need a fresh supply every day!
Your body needs water to prevent dehydration and perform most of its functions:
- Brain - Staying hydrated keeps your mind sharp and your mood stable. A headache can be a sign you should be drinking more water.
- Heart - Dehydration lowers blood volume which means your heart has to work harder to do its job.
- Lungs - Did you know your body loses water every time you breathe? Every day you lose about 400 millilitres of water just through breathing.
- Kidneys - Water is essential for your kidneys to eliminate toxic waste and regulate blood composition.
- Stomach - Your stomach and bowels need water so you can digest food and prevent constipation.
- Bladder - Drinking plenty of water helps reduce the risk of bladder infections and kidney stones.
According to our Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2018-2021 most Greater Geelong adults drink less than 5 cups of water per day. Aiming for 6-8 cups will help keep you in top shape.
Water and your budget
Tap water is cheap and easy to access at home or out in public.
In Greater Geelong we have some of the highest quality drinking water in the world. Our drinking fountains are safe for adults and children to use.
To maintain good hygiene:
- Flush drinking fountains and bubblers for 30 seconds before taking a sip.
- Avoid placing your mouth directly on the spout.
- Hold drink bottles at least 5cm away from the spout when refilling.
- If you need to push a button or lever use your elbow or a clean tissue to operate the tap.
- Wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub after use.
Water and the environment
Our tap water comes from protected catchments in the Otway foothills and the Great Dividing Range. Do you know where your bottled water comes from?
Always carry a reusable drink bottle with you. Refill it as soon as it gets empty so that you are less likely to buy bottled water or sugary drinks.
