Through the implementation of the Social Housing Plan 2020-2041 Council is committed to supporting the development of more social housing homes in Greater Geelong. The Affordable Social Housing Advisory Committee supported Council to do this by providing expert advice and feedback to Council.
The Affordable Social Housing Advisory Committee initially had 12 members which included community members with experience in social housing homelessness housing development and construction philanthropy research as well representation from the Victorian State Government.
The Committee provided advice to the City regarding the trust model for the Geelong Affordable Housing Trust. In April 2021 Council resolved to establish a trust with a Registered Housing Association as trustee.
The Affordable Social Housing Advisory Committee also provided content for the Citys 10-Year Strategy submission. They supplied feedback on a value-capture approach designed by SGS Economics and Planning which resulted in the City engaging SGS Economics and Planning to produce a Cost-Benefit Analysis of social housing in Greater Geelong Report.
The Advisory Committee also supported the City providing ongoing feedback and advice on the Citys identification of City-owned land to be transferred and identification of housing options for women in housing crisis a significant issue for the municipality.
The Committee met four times a year and was chaired by both Councillor Sarah Mansfield and Councillor Anthony Aitken. The committee wound up at the end of 2022.
