Detailed design of the Rippleside Inclusive Playspace

A new action plan highlighting the City’s projects initiatives and programs planned over the next financial year will boost efforts towards Greater Geelong being recognised as a clever and creative city-region.

The annual action plan for 2022-23 was noted by council tonight and supports the strategic directions and four-year priorities in the Our Community Plan 2021-25 to achieve the community’s 30-year vision.

Our Community Plan ensures that the community’s health and wellbeing is central to everything council does - whether it’s supporting economic growth creating opportunities for social connection or introducing safeguards to encourage sustainable development.

A total of 85 actions are planned such as:

  • Collaborate with Barwon Water and G21 councils to develop a facility to process the Citys food and garden waste into renewable energy and nutrient-rich products for agriculture;
  • Commence construction of a new inclusive play space at Rippleside Park;
  • Deliver a training and education program in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation to strengthen cultural tourism;
  • Launch a major annual live music program to support the music industry and local economy;
  • Develop a plan to transition to the City’s fleet to low emissions light vehicles;
  • Deliver the Fibre in the North project to provide community facilities and public spaces with access to ultra-high-speed internet; and
  • Build a new City of Greater Geelong website to make information and services more convenient and efficient for the community.

The action plan goes hand in hand with council’s endorsed Budget 2022-23 and the budgeted projects detailed within.

Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy:

 An action plan will keep the City accountable.

We have a lot of exciting actions in the works that will not only improve services and facilities but the health and wellbeing of the community.

The action plan and quarterly progress reports will keep the organisation on track in doing its bit to assist Greater Geelong’s clever and creative future.

Councillor Eddy Kontelj:

The Our Community Plan is a key strategic document that helps guide future council spending and resourcing

An annual action plan sharpens the City’s focus in delivering the strategic directions and four year-priorities in Our Community Plan.

The 85 actions demonstrate that we have a lot to look forward to in the region.

As chair of the Arts Live Entertainment & Hospitality portfolio I am particularly delighted that we are launching a major annual live music program to support the music industry and local economy.

These artists work tirelessly and in a similar manner to small business owners deserve recognition for their contribution to the local economy so it will be wonderful to see this come to life.
The City’s achievements have been detailed in a quarterly progress report against the one-year actions between 1 January - 31 March 2022 including:
  • Stage 1 of Victoria’s largest street light upgrade program completed with 13 000 residential street lights replaced with energy efficient LEDs in Stage 1;
  • Household food waste collection trial in Lara implemented seeing 25 tonnes of material diverted from landfill;
  • An upgrade of Stead Park dog park and delivery of a new fenced dog park in Lara; and
    Implementation of second hour free parking in 2P parking zones in Central Geelong.

At the end of March 61 actions were on track 11 were completed three hadn’t been started five needed improvement one wasn’t proceeding and four off track.

Tonight council also adopted an updated Our Community Plan which was reviewed to ensure that the strategic directions outcomes and priorities remain relevant for the current environment and community need.

No material change has been made to the plan however minor changes have been made to strengthen its alignment to the Organisation Strategy.
