The Mt Duneed Men’s Shed group and broader Mt Duneed community is set to benefit with Kardinia Ward Councillors Ron Nelson and Bruce Harwood officially opening the newly constructed Mt Duneed Community Shed on Sunday.
Tenants of the facility the Mt Duneed Men’s Shed (formerly the Grovedale Men’s Shed) are one of 14 such groups operating in the region; providing the opportunity for members many of them older and retired to remain active and connected.
The group has been meeting in temporary sites in recent years most recently at Foundation 61 in Mt Duneed.
While the Men’s Shed will manage the facility it will aim to engage other community groups by hiring out the space on a regular basis.
There is no barrier to who can use the facility to maximise the value of the venue to the community.
The community shed is one of many investments designed to cater for the continued growth in the area.
Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy:
It’s terrific to see this facility completed with the Council contributing $645 000 toward the project.
The Mt Duneed Community Shed will not only provide a home for the Men’s Shed it will also allow for the group to continue to flourish providing new and current members with the opportunity to stay active and involved.
The multipurpose creative space will ensure the facility is appealing to the broader community along with providing for artistic residents from around the region.
Councillor Ron Nelson Kardinia Ward:
The past two and a half years have taught us the importance of connection and this facility will go a long way to promoting interaction and a social outlet for members of the Mt Duneed community.
Community groups like the Mt Duneed Men’s Shed play a vital role in connecting residents with one another with benefits in mental health and improved resilience.
The Mt Duneed Men’s Shed was able to provide an internal fit-out of the building thanks to an $80 000 Victorian Government grant awarded in late 2021.
Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman:
Men’s Sheds provide an important way for men to come together and to share their life stories with one another build their skills and give back to their communities.
I’m proud to have announced funding to provide the tools the Men’s Shed needs to get started right now.
