St Albans Football Netball Club is set to expand its reach in Geelong’s eastern suburbs as the switch is hit on high-quality lighting at its St Albans Road home.

St Albans Reserve in Thomson was one of seven sporting venues across the City of Greater Geelong to receive new lighting thanks to a $2.5 million injection from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.

The City of Greater Geelong funded 10 per cent of the successful projects from within its 2020-2021 Budget in support of the Victorian Government commitment.

The ‘Supersaints’ form one of 12 member clubs of the Geelong Football League.

Along with the developments at St Albans Reserve sports facilities across the City of Greater Geelong to receive funding for lighting include:

  • Osborne Park in North Geelong
  • Evans Reserve in Norlane
  • St Leonards Lake Reserve in St Leonards
  • Grinter Reserve in Newcomb
  • Winter Reserve in Belmont and
  • Burdoo Reserve in Grovedale.

Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy:

Founded in 1880 St Albans Football Netball Club is one of the oldest clubs in the region and has long served an important role in the Thomson Whittington and wider East Geelong communities.

The improved lighting will extend the hours in which the club can run activities and this is bound to promote social cohesion as it offers increased opportunities for people to meet and connect.

Councillor Eddy Kontelj Brownbill Ward:

New lighting will allow St Albans Football and Netball Club to expand the availability of its playing and training facilities which in turn would lead to increased inclusion and added participation.

It’s great news for the Supersaints and we’re appreciative to the Victorian government for its support of the development of grassroots sport.

There’s an increase in female participation in football across the board and this sort of development will play a significant role in helping the club cater for the growing need for training-time availability.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens

The Andrews Government is proud to fund the new lighting at St Albans Reserve as part of lighting upgrades across the Geelong region.

These new lights will help the St Albans Football and Netball Club grow attracting new members and enabling players to train in first rate facilities.

The lighting upgrade follows construction of a new Council-funded $1.08 million pavilion and change facilities at the reserve officially opened in April last year.
