Corio Community Park - Shell Reserve Master Plan
The Corio Community Park Landscape Master Plan (Shell Reserve) creates a variety of spaces to be developed over time as funding and sponsorship opportunities arise.

These projects will focus on interpreting and developing cultural and creative aspects of community life and may be facilitated by an artist-in-residence program or similar collaborative process.

Design concept

The path system is made up of three parts:

  1. the inner path system comprised of 2 interlinking circuits

  2. connecting paths joining the inner circuits to the external pedestrian routes

  3. a central path linking major community activity centres

The path system is designed to create a series of interconnected spaces within the one site providing for the various user groups within the community.

Entry Plaza

The entry plaza is located on the most prominent corner of the site to provide a high profile face to the park. The plaza is designed as a distinctive visual feature that responds to the scale of the surrounding roads signage and commercial development.

The park entry is marked with vertical sculptures responding to the forms of the Shell Refinery towers in the distance. the use of industrial relics as the basis for the iconic markers is intended to reflect the communitys history.

Inner path system

The 2 interlinking granitic gravel circuits define smaller spaces within the site providing a variety of spaces for a range of passive and active recreational use.

Connecting paths

a series of connecting paths link the inner path system. Each of these timber edged asphalt paths leads to a point of interest an artistic comment a legend marker or an opportunity to define the history of the area and community within the

Central path: the concrete path creates a connection between two major social and community facilities; the shopping centre and Shell park.

Other features include:

  • Pedestrian link to the Shell Club defined by bollards.

  • Retention of existing speed hump.

  • Potential pedestrian connection to sports facilities.

  • A vertical art installation marks the hub of Shell Reserve where the boundaries of Corio Community Park the sports clubs and Shell Club intersect. The sculpture is aligned with the pieces located in the entry plaza to create a strong visual link along the central path.

  • Informal tree plantings are used to create an open frontage to the site and definition between the road and the park edge while maintaining clear views into the space from adjacent residential areas.

  • Selected trees which are damaged or dead are to be removed as specified by the tree survey. New plantings will be a mix of drought tolerant indigenous and native species.

  • The skate trail is located within the inner circuit in the north west corner of the site to allow skaters and pedestrians to cohabit the park space harmoniously. The adjacent mound provides a vantage point for spectating.

  • Earth form is used to create spaces within the relatively flat site.

  • A shelter and BBQ are set on the high point to provide a vantage point over the various activities occurring in the park. paths are graded to maintain wheelchair access.

  • Possible location for an additional small car park to be developed has been identified.

  • The pedestrian path is separated from the adjacent road by hands of low planting.

  • Rows of trees and bands of low planting provide open views and strong visual definition to the park boundary which is currently dominated by adjacent traffic.

  • Informal tree planting to the northern boundary frames views to the Shell Club.

  • Existing toilet block to be upgraded creating an opportunity to incorporate a mural type community art project on the walls to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building.

  • Zebra crossing and safety barrier used to define the pedestrian crossing point between the park and the toilet block/sports facilities.

  • Proposed additional speed hump to calm traffic.

Endorsed by Council in January 2005.
