1. Purpose

To provide appropriate knowledge skills and tools for the safe management of fatigue at the workplace.


2. Scope

This procedure applies to all City of Greater Geelong Employees Contractors and Volunteers whilst at the workplace or carrying out activities on behalf of the City of Greater Geelong

4. Definitions

City   The City of Greater Geelong 
EAP Employee Assistance Program
Fatigue           A state of mental and/or physical exhaustion which reduces a person’s ability to perform work safely and effectively. 
People Leader  Someone who has direct reports. This includes but is not limited to Managers Coordinators Supervisors and Team Leaders.
Prior Sleep Wake Model Is a means for determining a person’s fatigue risk levels based on the amount of sleep obtained in the prior 24 and 48 hour period.
Shift Work  Shift work involves working outside normal daylight hours (7am to 6pm).


5. Roles and Responsibilities

Role Responsibility
Health and Safety Manager
  • Ensure that corporate procedures are in place to enable the safe management of fatigue in the workplace.
  • Offering to arrange support (including training) counselling and medical advice for Employees.
Department Managers
  • Allocate trained People Leaders to ensure that fatigue risks are identified assessed and appropriately controlled.
