2022
Minna Leunig
Acrylic paint
1 Wright Place, Geelong

Commissioned for the 2022 Geelong Women's Street Art Commission project

Through her paintings Minna seeks to spark a sense of appreciation for the natural world as well as an interest in issues relating to environmental conservation during a time where fragile ecosystems need our care and protection the most. She is interested in the visual language of symbols - the simplifying and stripping back of shape to essential forms. Her work features bold silhouettes organic lines and demonstrates a careful consideration for how shapes fit together to create harmonious and balanced patterns - symbolic of finely balanced ecosystems and the way in which specific plants and animals fit together to create an interactive stability.

This piece is a celebration of and dedication to the native bird life of Wadawurrung country specifically yellow-tailed black cockatoos which Minna has always found to have a particularly strong mesmerising presence. There is something about the way they move through the skies in small groups calling out in hauntingly beautiful tones that evokes a sense of something ancient and sacred.

Minna Leunig is a Geelong based artist working primarily with acrylics and limited pigments. She creates playful primal and earthy images inspired by the natural world characterised by a wandering hand and an intuitive lyrical approach to aesthetics.

She has exhibited at galleries such as Backwoods aMBUSH Outré Juddy Roller VS Montsalvat Neon Parlour and Lamington Drive but has a keen interest in bringing art out of gallery spaces and into the public realm through street art working by the philosophy that art should be an integral part of everyday life and accessible to all.
