    In an Australian first, the Victorian Government has committed to implement Three-Year-Old Kindergarten for all children over a 10-year roll-out with a total investment of almost $5 billion, including $1.68 billion to support the infrastructure expansion required for the reform.

    This guide aims to assist you to understand the steps you need to take to register your child in our 3 and 4 year old kindergarten programs.

Local kindergartens operate from a range of service environments including stand-alone centres; long day childcare centres; and integrated child and family centres where they are located alongside other childrens services and program activities.

Kindergartens aim to develop childrens individual social emotional intellectual physical and language abilities in the year prior to commencing primary school.

Kindergarten enrolments

Children are eligible to attend kindergarten if the child turns 4 years of age on or before 30th April in the year of attendance.

Enrolment at a kindergarten can be arranged directly through your local kindergarten or alternatively contact the relevant kindergarten to find out how to register. There is generally high demand for available kindergarten places which are limited for each kindergarten by operating regulations.

Consequently kindergartens can have waiting lists well in advance of the actual year of your childs commencement.

Enrolment fees

Fees charged by individual kindergartens vary considerably and should be determined through inquiry at your local kindergarten.

An additional preschool fee subsidy is paid by the Victorian Government to help reduce the cost of preschool for eligible families who have a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card.

Most kindergartens also conduct fund raising activities associated with their operation throughout the year to assist with operational costs and providing new resources and equipment for the children.

Kindergarten management

Some kindergartens are managed by voluntary parent committees. This provides an opportunity for parents to become closely involved in the operation and development of the kindergarten.

Other kindergartens are operated or managed by schools church organisations childcare centres or Ealry Years Managers.

Kinder activities

Children enrolled in kindergarten participate in a variety of activities that reflect age appropriate interests and skills.

Kindergartens extend a childs knowledge of themselves and others as well as helping children understand their social environment.

Children have the opportunity to be involved in creative activities develop physical skills increase independence and develop positive self-awareness and confidence.
