Gender equity is one of our five key health and wellbeing priorities in Our Community Plan 2021-2025. By demonstrating and promoting gender equity practices we aim to influence better gender equality.
Gender equity framework
Our work in supporting gender equity is guided by the Ba-gurrk Gender Equity Framework.
The framework addresses gender equity as a governance community and organisational issue and provides a guide to develop implement and monitor actions. The second implementation plan is now being developed and will focus on advancing gender equity in the community.
Gender Equality Act
Under the Victorian Gender Equality Act 2020 councils are required to conduct a workplace gender audit and publish a plan to advance gender equality in the workplace. The City of Greater Geelongs Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-25 includes actions to address equal representation pay parity sexual harassment recruitment and workplace flexibility. Council also conducts gender impact assessments on all programs polices and services that impact the community.
Women in Community Life Advisory Committee
Our Women in Community Life Advisory Committee (WiCLAC) was established to advise Council on matters relating to womens participation representation and leadership in community life.
International Womens Day and Women in Community Life Awards
The Women in Community Life Awards recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women across the Geelong region. The awards form part of our annual International Women’s Day celebrations in March.

COVID-19 and gender
Read our Gender COVID-19 Impact Analysis Report commissioned to provide a gender equity perspective on the impact of COVID 19. The report informs the development of response and recovery strategies by acknowledging the particular impacts the pandemic has had on women (including cis and trans women and gender non-binary people) in the Greater Geelong area.

This Girl Can
Held in September each year This Girl Can Week celebrates women of all backgrounds abilities ages and body shapes getting active.
