Communication is always possible.
  • Use the person’s name.
  • Use gestures such as nodding hand and facial expressions.
  • Keep sentences short and specific.
  • Communicate in an age-appropriate way.
  • Understand the way the person likes to communicate.
  • Provide options visually and verbally. For example if you are offering tea or coffee show a tea bag and a jar of coffee.
  • Understand that people can express their choice in different ways such as touching looking pointing and sound or communications boards.
  • Be patient and avoid reading what a person is typing onto their communication device wait for the device to speak on their behalf.
