In 2016 50 CLOey (Household Composter ) units were trialled in households across Geelong and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
CLOey developed by Australian business Closed Loop Recycling is a compact household food waste composter which takes food waste (everything but large bones mollusc shells and cooking oils) and converts up to 4 kilograms per day into nutrient-rich soil improver while reducing waste volume by 90 percent.
Closely resembling coffee grounds the end product created by CLOey is dry easy to store and use and great for the garden. CLOey also prevents decomposing food waste from producing methane which is 25 times more potent than the carbon pollution emitted from a car exhaust.
CLOey trial achievements
50 CLOey units were trialled in houses across Geelong and saw an overwhelmingly positive response.
CLOey trial participant comment:
We absolutely love CLOey a great addition in our lives and a great way to reduce our impact on the environment.
CLOey saw weekly bin loads reduce by a third with participants all agreeing CLOey was easy or extremely easy to use and that smells generated by food waste were significantly reduced.
Support for the trial
Cleantech Innovations Geelong a business and industry support program striving to develop markets for clean technologies that are waste water and energy efficient supported the household trial of CLOey by subsidising the costs to the 50 residents participating.
Youll find more information about the CLOey units by visiting the Closed Loop website.
