Accepted spatial data formats from contractors
The purpose of these guidelines is to provide information about the GIS data formats that can be returned to City of Greater Geelong (COGG).

GIS at City of Greater Geelong

The City of Greater Geelong has a highly functional and detailed GIS system that is used widely across council.

This document aims to assist council contractors and consultants of the formats that can be provided back to council which may then integrate back into the councils GIS system.

GIS platform details

City of Greater Geelong uses Environment System Research Institute (ESRI) platform.

The ESRI platform is one of the most widely used and accepted systems in the world. The formats listed below should be projected using the map projection listed in this document.

Acceptable vector formats

  • ESRI Shapefile - .shp
  • File Geodatabase - .gdb
  • Personal Geodatabase - .mdb

Acceptable raster formats

  • GeoTiff - .tif
  • Jpeg/Jpeg2000 – .jpg
  • ECW - .ecw

Raster data should be in the most appropriate image resolution according to each project’s desired outcome.

Each raster image should also feature an associated world file (.tfw .jgw) to ensure the geo-reference of the images is correct.

Map projection details

All of the City of Greater Geelongs spatial geodatabase PLACES is required to be projected using the Map Grid of Australia (MGA) Zone 55 on the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).
