Microdermabrasion and derma-rolling
Microdermabrasion and derma-rolling are treatments offered by beauty therapy businesses.

Microdermabrasion

This is a non-chemical non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of micro-crystals or an exfoliating diamond tip to remove the outermost layer of skin.

There are different types of procedures:

  • micro-crystals for single use only
  • machine handle
    • if device is immersible clean then disinfect
    • if device is non-immersible clean with a detergent and water dampened cloth dry then disinfect with 70% alcohol
  • diamond or crystal tip
    • clean and disinfect after each client
    • if item has been used on broken or damaged skin then clean and sterilise
    • dispose if it cannot be sterilised.

Derma-rolling

This is also referred to as skin or micro-needling and uses microscopic needles to penetrate the outer layer of the skin. The process involves multiple needles of various lengths using a specialised roller or stamp mechanism.

This process is usually done in different ways:

  • derma-roller head for single-use only
  • derma-roller handle
    • if reusable clean and sterilise after each client
    • if not reusable dispose of after each client.

Beauty therapists are advised to always cleanse the clients skin first to reduce infection.

Microdermabrasion and hydradermabrasion can be used in salons together with some superficial chemical peels and some lasers.

Dermabrasion

This is a true surgical procedure performed by a qualified surgeon that aggressively exfoliates away the top-mid layers of skin.
