Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance cameras are installed in central Geelong to promote safety. There are a number of cameras located in townships and suburbs and other key locations in the municipality. The cameras operate in areas where anti-social behaviour or criminal activity may occur. The cameras in Central Geelong are linked to a control centre that is monitored by both specially trained council staff and Victoria Police. Signs have been placed in areas where activity is being monitored and all vision is recorded. The program aims to:
- provide a safer environment
- deter potential offenders
- assist in active intervention; and
- assist in crime detection and prosecution.
Access to footage
The City owns and maintains the camera network.
Data footage and photographs of incidents are controlled and managed by Victoria Police. Any requests for footage should be referred to Victoria Police - Geelong on 03 5225 3100. Please note that any incident must first be reported to Police before any request to view CCTV footage will be considered by them. The operation of the camera program is governed by strict protocols and procedures designed to safeguard the integrity and accountability of the program.

Protocols and operating procedures are in place to guide council officers contractors Victoria Police and other key partners in the program to ensure its aims are met and to maintain the programs integrity and commitment to:
- ensuring the privacy of individuals is protected
- ensuring cameras are used for their designated purpose only and
- protecting the rights of individuals.
