Wood fires and heaters
Wood fires can create an ambiance in your home which other heating does not.

Wood heaters are not prohibited. Even with the correct operation of a wood heater there will be detectable odours that are within acceptable levels.

Smoke from wood heaters and open fire places can occasionally cause problems for neighbours.

Owners should be aware of the smoke from their wood heaters.

Appropriate selection installation and maintenance of your wood heater are an important health and safety issue for you and your family. Visit the EPA website to learn more.

Running your wood heater properly will ensure your fuel lasts longer and reduce the costs.  Our Wood Heater Best Practice document outlines what you can do when operating your wood heater.

If your neighbour has a wood heater that produces a lot of smoke or if your neighbour is burning incorrect fuel you can do something about it.

Communication is important

Speak to your neighbour so they are aware that their heater is causing you concern.

The Dispute Settlement Centre have some helpful videos on discussing neighbourhood problems.

In resolving neighbourhood disputes it is important that you have an open mind and a willingness to reach a resolution.

If the matter is not resolved and is ongoing you may ask Council to assist you. If so you will be asked to complete a Smoke Diary.

Investigation process

When the diary is received we will investigate the situation and ring you to discuss further.

Each case is dealt with individually but penalties may apply if a nuisance is found to exist and is not stopped.

If we cannot resolve the matter you may be referred to the Dispute Settlement Centre.
