After retiring from nursing Libby Hogg searched for an activity to fill her time.
Being a keen green thumb volunteering with the Friends of Geelong Botanic Gardens was a natural fit.
Now Libby spends one morning a week helping to maintain the perennial border.
“My role is to work along with the other members of my group to maintain and care for this amazing section of the garden ” she says.
“Together we trim replant deadhead weed move plants fertilise mulch and perform the multitude of tasks needed to follow the yearly cycle of the plants in this border.”
Libby says volunteering is a fulfilling and valuable way to keep busy and involved learn new skills and meet new people.
“I would encourage anyone one wishing to become involved in any area in our community to follow the lead of so many others and become a volunteer ” she says.
“It just takes a little effort to decide the area you would wish to become involved with and then step out of your door.
“We don’t seek recognition for our involvement as volunteers but it is always nice to be thanked and acknowledged as volunteering is a two-way street with benefits for both sides.”
