In response to the feedback from the business owners residents and property owners in the area the City has introduced a commercial waste and recycling trial for the Central Geelong Laneways Precinct.
The trial commenced in 2020 and will be the first step in establishing more effective ways to manage commercial waste recycling and bin storage in our laneways.
Solving issues...
- Bin storageMany businesses do not have the space to store bins inside and instead store their bins in a nearby laneway. However bins in laneways take up space restrict access and can cause odour are unsightly and attract vermin. The permanent storage of a bin in a public area also contravenes our Neighbourhood and Amenity Local Law (2014).
- Waste collection trucksLarge numbers of truck movements results in traffic congestion reduced pedestrian safety odour and visual pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By using the communal compactors the number of trucks needing to access the precinct can be significantly reduced.
More about the trial...
Business owners in the Laneways Precinct (properties bound by Moorabool Ryrie Malop and Gheringhap Streets) will be able to sign up to use this new service.
Two compactors have been installed at the northern end of Shorts Place with one of the compactors collecting general waste and the other collecting co-mingled recycling.
The compactors will be available for use by the participating businesses day and night with access controlled via swipe cards.
Existing arrangements...
Businesses do not have to use the rubbish and recycling compactors. If you wish to make your own arrangements for garbage and recycling you are welcome to do so.
Under our Neighbourhood and Amenity Local Law (2014) a bin cannot be permanently stored in a public area which includes a laneway.
In conjunction with the introduction of the trial we will be discussing responsible bin storage options with businesses in the area.
