Food is a basic human right and there are a number of reasons why a person or persons may become food insecure in their lifetime.

Food security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life ~ Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations Rome declaration 1996.

At any given time a proportion of people experience some degree of food insecurity which can occur at the individual household and community level.
