Guidance for small egg producers
Information has been developed for home egg producers with less than 50 birds and who sell their eggs.
This information will relate to you if you:
- produce and sell eggs at your farm gate or at a market stall;
- are a Bed and Breakfast business or rural cafe that serves eggs that are produced on site;
- are any other food business that produces some eggs which are used in food preparation on site or sold;
- are a community group school aged care or child care facility that has a few chickens for educative or recreational purposes and use these eggs or sells them to family or friends connected with the facility.
You have responsibilities under food safety law to provide safe eggs which include:
- managing the hazards of egg production
- the obligation to sell only clean and uncracked eggs
- record keeping
- registering with council - if selling off site such as at a market or event
- bird health
- egg collection
- handling and cleaning eggs
- checking eggs for faults
- packaging and labelling
- storing and transporting.
You can see the Producing Safe Eggs at Home information at the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning website.
