Don’t skip your bin hire responsibilities
We’re all responsible for the correct disposal of waste from our homes, and we should know where it goes.

Hiring a skip bin to dispose of waste generated during home renovations is no different.  You must take reasonable steps to ensure the skip bin operator is taking your waste to the correct place for disposal.

Unfortunately waste from demolition and construction is often disposed of illegally. This means it is dumped tipped or buried on public or private land that is not licensed to accept it.

It’s against the law to illegally dispose of any waste and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can fine property owners for using a skip bin business that disposes of waste illegally.

Before hiring a skip bin home renovators should ask the skip bin operator these questions:

  • Where will my demolition and building waste be taken?
  • Is that landfill licensed?
  • Do you provide a receipt to show it was disposed of at a licensed landfill?
  • Do you have a list of what can and cannot go in the skip?

It’s a good idea to obtain a couple of quotes from different bin hire businesses so you can compare prices.  Be wary of skip bin businesses that offer very cheap quotes and don’t use a business that cannot prove they dispose of waste at a licensed landfill.

There are currently two licensed landfills accepting construction and demolition waste within the City of Greater Geelong boundary. These landfills are located at Drysdale and Fyansford.

Correct disposal of asbestos

Asbestos cannot go in your skip bin with all your other renovation waste. There are special requirements for preparing and disposing of asbestos and it will only be accepted at designated asbestos landfills.

Landfills that are licensed to accept asbestos have a designated pit for burying the building material.

The asbestos must be specially wrapped and labelled as follows:

  • Keep the material wet until it is packaged
  • Carefully package the material including any offcuts in two layers of 0.2mm thick polythene sheeting
  • Keep the packages of a manageable size so they can be lifted & moved by two people
  • Completely seal the packages with adhesive tape
  • Place smaller sized asbestos waste such as tiles offcuts and dust in two 0.2 millimetres thick polythene bags (that is: double bagged) then tie and seal for disposal with other asbestos waste
  • Clearly label the packages ‘asbestos waste’ using a permanent marker pen

Domestic asbestos (houses)

The Drysdale Landfill which is operated by The City is licensed to accept domestic quantities of asbestos - no larger than a six by four trailer.

Before transporting asbestos to the Drysdale Landfill you must call the landfill and make an appointment at least one hour before you arrive to drop-off the asbestos.

The asbestos service is available every day but asbestos will not be accepted after 3:00pm. A fee applies for disposal of asbestos.

Commercial asbestos (building sites or businesses)

Commercial asbestos comes from building sites or businesses.  Only landfills classified commercial can accept larger quantities of asbestos from commercial or industrial sources.

The Fyansford landfill is licensed to accept asbestos from commercial and domestic sources. Contractors removing asbestos from a home can take it to a commercial asbestos landfill such as the Fyansford facility.

Contact the Fyansford landfill before transporting asbestos to confirm delivery arrangements and fees.
