Venue history
The Shire of Corio built this venue which was then known as Corio Leisuretime Centre in 1976 on Council owned land. The Centre was built at a cost of $1.3 million and grants were received from State and Federal Governments to assist in funding the project.
The centre was predominantly built for the sports of Badminton and Basketball with the Geelong Badminton Association Inc and the Geelong Amateur Basketball Association the original tenants of the centre. The Geelong Amateur Volleyball Association was invited to join the venue as a tenant in 1980.
The Geelong Badminton Association Inc negotiated an agreement with the Shire of Corio in 1984 for the development of a new six court Badminton annex to be built on the site. The Badminton Association contributed $190 000 to the cost of this development and entered into a 30-year lease with the Shire of Corio for these facilities. Leisuretime was again expanded in 1987 with the construction of eight squash courts.
The Shire of Corio directly managed the centre until 1994 when an agreement with Life Be In It was formed. In 1996 Life Be in It surrendered their agreement partly due to a major tenant of the venue moving a large portion of their operations to the newly built Geelong Arena Annexe courts. The Geelong Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) then undertook management until 1999 when the City of Greater Geelong was successful in securing the management and operation contract. Both management agreements with Life Be in It and GABA were ceased due to pressures to achieve agreed financial outcomes.
Today the Leisuretime Sports Precinct is managed by our Leisure and Recreation Department and manages/delivers over 21 000 hours of community sport and participation opportunities annually 109 different clubs and groups run competitions programs or hire space annually over 157 000 people visit annual for their regular health & wellbeing needs. The precincts aim is to deliver great experiences to all venue users visitors and the local Geelong community.
In early 2018 we opened our new $2 million FIFA standard outdoor multi-purpose synthetic pitch with competition standard lights officials areas as well as various goals to cater for club training and development programs.
